UK intelligence assesses Ukrainian offensive in Kursk region
On January 5, 2025, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a limited armored counterattack against Russian troops in the Kursk region of Russia, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.
The attack took place as Ukraine continued to defend its territory in Kursk from constant attacks by Russian and North Korean troops.
“Despite high casualties, Russia has only been able to make minor advances against Ukrainian-held territory in recent weeks,” the report said.
In eastern Ukraine, Russia continued to concentrate its attacks in the central part of the Donetsk region. In particular, Russian troops have largely captured the town of Kurakhove. “Central Donetsk region continues to be the most volatile area of the frontline in eastern Ukraine,” the British Ministry of Defense said.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine launched an operation in the Kursk region on August 6, 2024, occupying more than 1,000 square kilometers. After that, the Russian army, with the help of DPRK troops, was able to retake part of the territory.
