On October 8, the UK government, led by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, announced new wide-ranging sanctions to weaken Russia, according to a statement from the British government press service.

The new sanctions from the UK government target several individuals and entities that:

  • Produce or transport Russian oil, which funds the Russian economy;
  • Facilitate the production or global trade of goods used to support Moscow’s ballistic missile capabilities and sustain its military-industrial base;
  • Fill the Russian military budget by circumventing sanctioned financial services.

The 38 new entries on the sanctions lists include Russian oil companies, shadow fleet tankers, and suppliers of goods critical to the Russian armed forces.

Specifically, London has imposed restrictions on two Russian oil companies, Zarubezhneft and INK Capital. The main goal is not only to block the flow of Russian oil money but also to cut off the routes used to evade sanctions.

In addition, 12 more oil tankers operating as part of Russia's shadow fleet have been placed under restrictions.

"Today we are sanctioning three crypto exchanges and two payment platforms, including three linked to Kyrgyzstan and one linked individual. We suspect these entities are being used by Russia to circumvent financial sanctions, two of which have processed and facilitated transactions with the A7 network," the British government statement reads.

The new sanctions package covered 17 organizations and individuals involved in supplying goods that the UK, US, and EU consider vital for Russia's further military efforts, also known as Common High Priority Items (CHP).

This specifically refers to Russian importers of machine tools, electronics, and materials critical for the production of Russian ballistic missiles and drones.

"The movement of these items is global, with individuals and entities cloaking illicit trade with Russia through third countries," explained the British authorities.

On October 1, the UK government also announced sanctions against Russia. We reported on who exactly was covered by these restrictions.

The US Congress called on President Donald Trump to immediately hit Russia with hellish sanctions.
