U.S. disappointed with Orban's stance on supporting Ukraine
The United States is disappointed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is casting doubt on support for Ukraine in Europe, according to Jim O'Brien, the U.S. State Department's Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs.
"I think we're disappointed that ... Prime Minister Orban has chosen to stand alone in the European Union in questioning the fight to support Ukrainians," emphasized the representative of the State Department.
He also added that the U.S. will monitor whether Hungary fulfills its promise not to be the last country to ratify Sweden's NATO membership.
O'Brien expressed hope that Sweden would join the Alliance soon.
Orban's position
It's worth noting that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has refused to provide military assistance to Ukraine after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. He continues to maintain partnership relations with Moscow despite its aggression.
Hungary has repeatedly used its veto power within the European Union when issues related to assistance to Ukraine were discussed. Recently, Orban blocked an initiative that envisaged providing €50 billion to Ukraine.
