Two little-known symptoms of high blood pressure
Two little-known facial signs can help identify high blood pressure, which should not be ignored as they may indicate health issues, citing the Daily Express.
Why high blood pressure is dangerous
High blood pressure, if left untreated, can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney or heart failure, vision impairment, and other complications. Even moderate increases in blood pressure are associated with a reduction in lifespan.
This relatively common condition often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed until it leads to a severe health problem.
This is partly because high blood pressure rarely shows symptoms and is often called a silent killer.
Up to 40% of people with hypertension may be unaware of their condition, as this disease frequently has a symptomless course.
Blood pressure can sometimes be elevated temporarily without being classified as a disease, often due to emotional stress, alcohol intake, or intense physical exertion.
Symptoms on your face
Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds are more common in individuals with high blood pressure.
However, there is some debate about whether high blood pressure directly causes nosebleeds.
While most experts believe that hypertension itself does not trigger nosebleeds unless blood pressure is extremely high, it can damage blood vessels in the nose, raising the likelihood of bleeding.
A 2020 study also found that individuals with high blood pressure are 2.7 times more likely to require emergency care for nosebleeds compared to those with normal blood pressure.
Blurred vision
Blurred vision or other changes can occur in people with blood pressure levels of 180/120.
This is because high blood pressure can damage many tiny blood vessels in the eyes.
Elevated blood pressure may increase the risk of developing other eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, which can lead to vision impairment or blindness if untreated.
Other signs of high blood pressure include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Dizziness
- Headaches.
