Trump says he has backup plan if Iran talks fail

The United States does not rule out a positive outcome in negotiations with Iran, but is also preparing for an alternative scenario if no agreement is reached, US President Donald Trump said during a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One.
According to Trump, Tehran itself has proposed holding a new round of talks with Washington, both through intermediaries and in direct negotiations.
"They requested a meeting through their surrogates and directly, and we are meeting. Good things can happen," Trump said.
He also noted that the sharp decline in oil prices could indicate that markets are expecting possible progress in negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Trump also expressed optimism about the prospects for the talks.
"I think there's a good chance that something could happen. And if it does, good. If it doesn’t, we go back to doing what we were doing two days ago," he added, apparently referring to US strikes on Iranian targets.
For 13 consecutive nights, the United States carried out airstrikes against Iran. However, according to Bloomberg, US forces have not conducted any new operations since the evening of July 24, while Iranian authorities and local media have also reported no further attacks.
Amid the pause, US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said President Donald Trump is giving Tehran room for diplomacy. He stressed that the United States is prepared to return to a military option if Iran does not approach the negotiations seriously.
