Donald Trump has decided to put the development of AI in the U.S. under separate government oversight — the president is creating an AI Force and will appoint his own AI Czar, according to Gizmodo.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to create a special government structure called the AI Force and soon appoint a new “AI Czar.”
In his view, these measures will help protect the industry from attacks by political opponents and ensure its continued unrestricted growth.
Details of the new initiative
Trump stressed that he would not allow the “radical left” to destroy the technology sector.
Notably, he said he is considering only people with a “high IQ” for the position of “AI Czar.”
What is known about the future structure:
- The new unit will conceptually resemble the U.S. Space Force, created during Trump’s first presidential term.
- The government does not plan to artificially limit or restrict technological development. In cases of wrongdoing, officials will rely on the existing criminal and civil justice system.
- The tech industry was not informed about the plan in advance, leaving Silicon Valley somewhat confused.
Debate over the pace of AI development: The political context
The announcement of the AI Force comes amid active debate within the industry itself.
Earlier, former and current employees of leading labs, including Anthropic, as well as executives at OpenAI and SpaceX, called for a temporary slowdown in AI development because of existential risks.
Nevertheless, Trump has called concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence a “SICK conspiracy” that allegedly benefits only China, while dismissing complaints about the impact of data centers as a hoax.
