Trump to meet with India’s PM Narendra Modi next week
At a campaign event Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he intends to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week, according to a CNBC report.
“He happens to be coming to meet me next week, and Modi, he’s fantastic,” claimed Trump while answering a question about free trade and job protections in the US. The meeting will take place despite Trump calling India a “very big abuser” of the US-India trade relationship.
India's Ministry of External Affairs declined to reveal the purpose of the meeting with Donald Trump when contacted on Wednesday for more details. This will be Modi's first visit to the US since he won a historic third term in office in June.
Narendra Modi will be in the US this weekend where he is scheduled to attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by President Joe Biden. After that, Modi is expected to address the “Future Summit” at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23.
Recent visits of PM Narendra Modi
In July this year, Modi visited Moscow to discuss further cooperation between Russia and India, which concerned the US, according to US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.
In addition, at the end of August, Narendra Modi made a diplomatic visit to Ukraine, which US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma called important amid Russian destabilization of global order.
