The United States is ready to help Russia after a case of pneumonic plague was reported in the Irkutsk region, where a 28-year-old laboratory technician at a plague-control institute died of the disease, and around 200 people have been isolated, according to a statement by President Donald Trump to reporters on October 5.
The US president acknowledged that he was aware of the situation in Russia's Irkutsk region, although he has not publicly commented on it. According to Trump, humanity once knew how to control the plague, but the pathogens have become stronger, like an army, while drugs that once worked are now less effective.
"So we will help. Anybody that has that kind of problem, we are always ready to help," Trump assured.

A 28-year-old laboratory technician at the Irkutsk anti-plague institute died at a hospital in the city of Shelekhov on the night of October 2. Local media say a week earlier she had broken a test tube containing the pneumonic plague pathogen at work.
The hospital's inpatient department was placed under quarantine, while around 200 people who had contact with the woman were isolated and placed under medical observation. The Irkutsk regional authorities have not officially named the diagnosis, referring only to a particularly dangerous infection. Alexey Tsydenov, head of neighboring Buryatia, publicly said that the woman had died of plague.
This is the most severe form of the disease and, unlike bubonic plague, can spread from person to person through the respiratory tract. Before this case, Russia had not recorded any human plague infections since 2017.
