People close to US President Donald Trump are rushing to propose several workable business deal options and other ways to strengthen ties with Greenland, according to Bloomberg.

According to the agency, the White House is considering potential business deals, including rare earth mineral extraction projects and the construction of hydroelectric power plants, to give the United States greater influence on the island.

Earlier, Denmark refused to give up control over Greenland, while European leaders issued warnings to discourage Washington from attempting to seize territory from a NATO ally. The use of force is not being seriously considered.

After a surge of activity on the issue early last year, previously urgent efforts to implement the president’s vision faded into the background.

However, a sudden wave of public comments about taking over Greenland in the days following the US operation in Venezuela has once again made the issue a top priority.

At present, US officials are focused on potential business deals that could give Washington greater leverage on the island. However, sources say these projects are likely not yet at a stage that would satisfy Trump’s desire to deliver quick and eye-catching results.

At the same time, the sources note that more ambitious ideas aimed at politically bringing Greenland closer to the United States have stalled amid a cool reception from the Danish government.

According to people familiar with the situation, the use of force to seize Greenland is not being seriously considered. Senior Republicans also sought this week to dismiss the idea that the United States is contemplating military action on the island.

Background

Tensions around Greenland intensified after a successful US special forces operation in Venezuela in early January 2026, during which President Nicolás Maduro was captured.

Following that, Donald Trump once again raised the issue of Greenland coming under US control, calling the island strategically vital to the security of the Western Hemisphere.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is now attempting to ease tensions with European partners. During talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and US lawmakers, he assured them that Washington prefers negotiations.
