A debate over the influence of major media holdings has intensified in the US. Amid potential decisions by regulators, criticism is being directed at several television networks, along with calls to limit their further expansion, according to Bloomberg.
US President Donald Trump stated that federal regulators should not allow major television networks to increase their reach.
According to him, such developments would strengthen the positions of what he called the left-wing news outlets.
In his posts, he specifically highlighted ABC and NBC, which he described as the "virtual arm of the Democratic Party," emphasizing that these networks are the most concerning.
"If this would also allow the Radical Left Networks to ‘enlarge,’ I would not be happy. ABC & NBC, in particular, are a disaster - A VIRTUAL ARM OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY," Trump said in a social media post Sunday.
Call to restrict media expansion
The American leader said that he considers it necessary not only to prevent the expansion of these companies’ reach but also to consider reducing their presence.
In another post, he noted: "They should be viewed as an illegal campaign to the Radical Left. NO EXPANSION OF THE FAKE NEWS NETWORKS. If anything, make them SMALLER!"
Regulatory context
The statements came amid reports that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) may approve the expanded coverage of several networks and consider a merger deal involving Nexstar Media Group and Tegna Inc.
Additional context is shaped by a potential sale of Warner Bros. Discovery, which is facing difficulties due to declining interest in traditional television and a gradual shift of audiences to streaming platforms.
Kyiv commented on a recent statement by Donald Trump regarding Ukraine’s supposed lack of gratitude: Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the country values the support of Washington and the US President, noting that the Ukrainian side consistently expresses appreciation for the assistance provided by the United States.
Ukraine has seen the first positive shifts after the opening day of the Geneva talks with the American side: according to Ukrainian leadership, members of Donald Trump’s team have begun listening more attentively to Kyiv’s position.
