US President Donald Trump was not deeply involved in the details of the peace plan to end the war in Ukraine, according to the Washington Post.

The WP refers to an American official speaking on condition of anonymity, who said that Trump received only general instructions regarding the negotiations.

"You tell him, 'I’m going to try to get a deal.' He will say, 'Great, go see what you can do.' And that's the level of detail he has," the official said.

The official added that there was "absolute chaos" in Washington, as even White House units did not know what was going on.

A European official said the same, noting that on November 21, the US capital was "almost taken by surprise on the whole thing."

US peace plan for Ukraine

Bloomberg previously reported that the peace plan aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine — the one the United States presented to Kyiv — was drafted in October by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, together with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Miami.

According to the outlet, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was unaware that the plan was being developed. President Donald Trump did not take part in the process but approved the Witkoff–Dmitriev plan after reviewing it.

It was also reported that US officials have been secretly consulting with Russian counterparts to develop a new peace plan for Ukraine.
