US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran supposedly wants to reach a deal but is afraid to say so due to fears of being killed, reports CNN.

According to the American leader, negotiations between the US and Iran are ongoing, but the Iranian side is reluctant to publicly acknowledge this.

“Nobody’s ever seen anything like we’re doing in the Middle East with Iran, and they are negotiating, by the way, and they want to make a deal so badly, but they’re afraid to say it because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people. They’re also afraid they’ll be killed by us,” Trump said.

His remarks came at a fundraising dinner in Washington supporting the Republican wing’s campaign in the House of Representatives.

What preceded

Earlier on Wednesday, the White House stated that negotiations with Iran had not reached a dead end, even after Tehran did not immediately accept the US 15‑point peace plan to end the war. CNN sources say the US is working to organize a meeting in Pakistan to discuss ways out of the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged that messages have been exchanged with the US through intermediaries, but insisted that these messages do not constitute negotiations.

Meanwhile, a CNN report notes that Iran has been bolstering defenses on Kharg Island for several weeks in anticipation of a potential US ground operation. Specifically, Tehran is laying mines, moving in troops, and deploying air defense systems.
