US President Donald Trump said he does not want an extension of the ceasefire with Tehran, according to his interview with CNBC.

"We won the war… We have totally beaten them - militarily and otherwise. I mean, I wish you could hear the conversations we have with them… If we left right now, it would take them twenty years to rebuild," the US president said.

Trump was also asked whether he would want to extend the ceasefire with Iran if the situation develops positively.

"Well, I don't want to do that. We don't have that much time," the US president emphasized.

Talks between the US and Iran

The first round of talks between the US and Iran, which concluded in Islamabad (Pakistan) on April 12, did not produce any significant results.

US Vice President JD Vance said the talks lasted more than 21 hours, but the sides failed to reach an agreement because Tehran did not provide firm guarantees that it would abandon the development of nuclear weapons.

Yesterday, Tehran announced that Iran would not take part in the next round of talks with the US. Trump also said that extending the two-week ceasefire with Iran was "highly unlikely" and added that the Strait of Hormuz would be blocked until a deal is reached.

However, Axios reported today, citing its own sources, that Vance will travel to Islamabad on Tuesday morning for talks with Iran. It is expected that Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will also join the negotiations.
