The largest island on the planet, Greenland, which is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds significant importance for the national security of the US, states Congressman Mike Waltz, nominated by future US President Donald Trump for the position of National Security Advisor.
An American politician commented on the importance of Greenland following Trump's recent statement that the US should take control of the island.
"This is about critical minerals. This is about natural resources," explained Waltz during an interview on Fox News when asked about the future US president's desire to purchase Greenland.
According to Trump's advisor, it’s about the fact that, as polar ice recedes, the Chinese are now sending icebreakers and advancing there as well.
"So it's oil and gas. It's our national security," he said.
Waltz also commented on Russia's intentions to become the king of the Arctic, with more than 60 icebreakers, some of which are nuclear-powered.
Trump's "attempt" on Greenland
Earlier this week, Trump, who will assume the US presidency on January 20, did not rule out the possibility of using military or economic actions to acquire the Arctic island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark.
During his first presidential term, Trump offered Denmark to sell Greenland, but Copenhagen rejected the idea.
Recently, Greenland's Prime Minister Múte Egede also stated that the island is not for sale. Additionally, the European Union urged respect for the sovereignty of member countries following Trump's statements about Greenland.
As previously reported, the media suggests that Trump's statements may be driven by his policy of countering Russia and China.
Additionally, Greenland, which is part of NATO due to Denmark's membership, is strategically located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, between Europe and North America, and is crucial for the US military and its ballistic missile early warning system.
