European officials are outraged by the US peace plan recently presented by the American leader’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. In fact, one EU official reportedly suggested that he see a psychiatrist, according to Politico.
Specifically, EU officials criticized one point of Trump’s peace plan, which proposes that $100 billion of frozen Russian assets be used by Washington for reconstruction efforts after a ceasefire. According to the document, the US plans to receive 50 percent of the profits from this activity.
“The Europeans are exhausting themselves trying to find a viable solution to use the assets for the benefit of Ukrainians and Trump wants to profit from them. This proposal is likely to be rejected by everyone,” a source told Politico.
A senior EU official in Brussels mocked the idea, noting that no matter how much Trump wants, he does not have the authority to unfreeze Russian assets held in Europe. An official from one EU government resorted to colorful language to express their outrage, while a high-ranking EU politician said: “Witkoff needs to see a psychiatrist.”
US peace plan
The US peace plan was drafted by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff with the support of Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev. The document consists of 28 points.
According to the plan, Russia would receive part of the Donbas territories in exchange for granting Ukraine and the EU long-term security guarantees, a reduction of the Ukrainian army, the abandonment of long-range weapons, and more.
Among other provisions, there is a clause on using frozen Russian assets for Washington’s benefit, with the US planning to spend them on Ukraine’s reconstruction while receiving 50% of the profit from each transaction.
