The newly elected US President Donald Trump seeks friendly relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Trump's plan for peace in Ukraine may resemble Joe Biden's approach, The New York Times reports.

As the media outlet writes, Trump is taking office with a vision of America's role in the world that drastically differs from that of his predecessor. In particular, he seeks to have friendly relations with Putin, which could lead to a reduction in US support for Ukraine and a threat to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

However, despite these aspirations, Trump will also find many aspects of Biden's policies that he will appreciate. Except for notable exceptions regarding Europe and his plans for Russia and Ukraine, Trump's initial approach may surprisingly resemble Biden's status quo.

"There tends to be more continuity between administrations of different parties — even administrations of very different styles, like Trump and Biden — than the casual observer might expect. We tend to focus on the big differences," says Richard Fontaine, the chief executive of the Center for a New American Security.

One reason for this is that President Biden has continued several key policies from Trump's first term.

Trump's peace plan

Donald Trump previously claimed that he could end the war between Russia and Ukraine in one day. Media reports suggested that his peace plan might involve handing over part of Ukraine's territories.

Another version of the plan, voiced by British media, involves creating a buffer zone between Ukraine and Russia, which would be patrolled by European troops.

At the same time, one of Trump's advisers called the return of Crimea to Ukraine "unrealistic," but the elected president's office refuted this statement, calling it false.

More details about this statement can be found in the RBC-Ukraine material.
