US President Donald Trump stated that the cancellation of tariffs imposed by Washington would be a disaster for America. According to him, the decision would destroy the country, according to the Associated Press and in his post on the social media platform Truth Social.

Specifically, a US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that Trump did not have the legal authority to impose wide-ranging tariffs.

"Trump was not legally allowed to declare national emergencies and impose import taxes on almost every country, largely upholding a decision by a specialized federal trade court," AP reported.

At the same time, the appeals court overturned part of the ruling that called for the immediate cancellation of the tariffs.

As a result, the tariffs remain in effect, allowing the Trump administration to appeal the case to the Supreme Court.

Trump's reaction

US President Donald Trump reacted almost immediately to the court’s decision. According to him, the court made a mistaken ruling. He also noted that the tariffs are still in place and issued several warnings.

"If these Tariffs ever went away, it would be a total disaster for the Country. It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong," Trump said.

He added that the US will no longer tolerate trade deficits, unfair tariffs, and non-tariff trade barriers imposed by other countries, whether friends or foes. He noted that they undermine our manufacturers, farmers, and everyone else.

"If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America," the president concluded.

Trump’s tariffs

On April 2, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced wide-ranging tariffs on imports from most countries (US trading partners).

However, he soon announced a 90-day pause to negotiate trade agreements. Deals were reached with a few countries, while some clarifying issues are still being resolved. Overall, on the night of August 1, the White House published an updated list of tariffs against countries.

Trump’s tariff war did not end there. Recently, it was reported that the US is imposing tariffs on all imported goods without exception. For details on the new rules, see the RBC-Ukraine article.
