Preparations for the meeting in Budapest between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are still underway, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Facebook.

According to numerous media reports, the planned meeting was postponed due to Moscow's refusal to immediately cease fire against Ukraine.

Orbán reported that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is currently in Washington.

"Preparations for the peace summit are ongoing. The date has not yet been set. When the time comes, we will hold it," Orbán wrote.

Possible cancellation of the meeting

Last week, Trump announced that he and Putin would meet soon in Hungary to try to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump said he did not want to hold a "wasted meeting" but suggested that further developments were possible and that they would inform about this in the next two days.

Orbán, who is trailing in most polls ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections, has long been an ally of Trump.

He also maintains warm relations with Moscow, further reinforcing his status as an outcast that he has already gained in Brussels after years of conflict over Hungary’s democratic backsliding.

According to a Razumkov Center poll, in 2025 Hungary remains the only European country perceived as hostile. 52% of Ukrainians have a negative view of it.
