US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin may agree on initial terms for a ceasefire without Ukraine’s participation, reports Reuters.

Today, Trump and Putin will meet in Alaska and hold talks amid uncertainty over the US president’s hopes of reaching an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine.

The meeting between the Russian and US leaders at a Cold War–era airbase in Alaska will be their first face-to-face talks since Trump’s return to the White House.

A source close to the Kremlin said the sides appeared to have found some vague common ground in advance.

“Apparently, some terms will be agreed upon tomorrow (Friday) because Trump cannot be refused, and we are not in a position to refuse (due to sanctions pressure),” said the source, who requested anonymity.

Trump-Putin summit in Alaska

Today, August 15, Donald Trump will meet with Vladimir Putin.

The talks will focus on a ceasefire on the front line and the possibility of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.

On the eve of the summit, the Kremlin declared its commitment to a diplomatic settlement of the war and once again accused Ukraine of unwillingness to engage in dialogue.

The American leader estimated the probability of unsuccessful talks with Putin at 25% and noted that, in case of failure, the US is ready to impose sanctions against Russia.

If the outcome is positive, a trilateral Trump-Putin-Zelenskyy summit is planned.
