US President Donald Trump said it will take about six months to see whether US sanctions will have any effect on Russia, according to his remarks at the White House.

When asked by a reporter whether Vladimir Putin was mistaken in claiming that Russia is unaffected by US sanctions and that they will have no serious impact on the Russian economy, Trump replied:

“I'm glad he feels that way. That's good. I will let you know about it in six months from now. Let's see how it works.”

The Russian outlet Kommersant today quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying that the new US sanctions supposedly won’t have a significant impact on Russia’s economy.

“Yes, they (the sanctions - ed.) are serious for us, of course, that's clear. And they will have certain consequences, but they will not significantly impact us, especially our economic well-being,” Putin boasted.

He added that US sanctions would negatively affect Russian-American relations, complaining that the move was an unfriendly act and an attempt to pressure Russia.

US sanctions against Russia

On the night of October 23, the US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions against Russia in an effort to push Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table with Ukraine.

The restrictions target Russian energy giants Rosneft and Lukoil, along with a large number of their subsidiaries.

In addition, on October 23, the European Union approved a new package of sanctions against Russia, which includes a full ban on importing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting in 2027.
