The Trump T1 Phone smartphone project, which was meant to become an American answer to global brands, has ended up at the center of a major scandal. After a year of empty promises, the company Trump Mobile updated its terms of use, effectively removing any responsibility for releasing the device or refunding customers, according to Trump Mobile.

From promises to full uncertainty

The story of the Trump T1 Phone began last June with a high-profile announcement. The device, priced at $499, was supposed to compete in the mid-range smartphone segment.

Its main feature was said to be American production — the phone was promised to be assembled directly in the United States, although this was already questioned.

However, over the months following the start of preorders, the company’s messaging began to change rapidly. First, Trump Mobile repeatedly revised the design and technical specifications of the device. Later, the claim of US manufacturing disappeared entirely. The latest version of the device, presented in April, was reportedly just a rebranded version of the Taiwanese HTC U24 Pro.

Legal maneuvers and отказ from obligations

The biggest outrage among customers was caused by a quiet change in the preorder terms. In the new version of the rules, the company explicitly stated that the $100 deposit does not represent a completed purchase agreement. Instead, it only gives the customer “the opportunity to buy the smartphone if it ever comes to market.”

Moreover, Trump Mobile now officially states that a preorder does not guarantee that production of the device will even begin, and the initial price of $499 may change at any time. Effectively, the company has legally shielded itself from claims in the event of a full cancellation of the project.

Deposits under question: user experiences

Although the official terms state that the deposit should be refunded if development is discontinued, reality appears to be different. On the social platform Reddit, an increasing number of users are reporting receiving emails from Trump Mobile stating that the T1 Phone release has been cancelled. At the same time, the emails claim that the $100 paid by potential customers is not refundable.

The company has not yet officially commented on the widespread refusal to issue refunds.
