US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring truck drivers to speak English fluently, according to CNN.

The document describes this measure as a "non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers."

"My Administration will enforce the law to protect the safety of American truckers, drivers, passengers, and others, including by upholding the safety enforcement regulations that ensure that anyone behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle is properly qualified and proficient in our national language, English," the order said.

Last month, Trump signed a separate executive order declaring English as the official language of the United States.

This was the first time in US history that an official language was designated at the national level. The order also repealed a mandate signed by President Bill Clinton, which required agencies to assist those who do not speak English. However, agencies are still allowed to offer services in other languages.

CNN adds that these orders came amid Trump's aggressive fight against illegal immigration and efforts to reform the US immigration system.
