President of the United States Donald Trump has directed the government to reopen the famous Alcatraz prison, located on an island near San Francisco, the Associated Press reports.

As Trump explained on Truth Social, the USA when it was "a more serious nation," would lock up the most dangerous criminals - those who brought suffering and misery - as far away from others as possible, without hesitation.

"That is why, today, I'm directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt Alcatraz, to house America's most ruthless and violent offenders," the US President added.

According to AP, the decision to reopen Alcatraz is likely to be difficult and extremely costly, since the prison was shut down back in 1963 due to high maintenance costs and the challenges of supplying the island, which had to be done by boat.

A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons, in turn, stated that the agency "will comply with all Presidential Orders."

Alcatraz is a former federal prison located on the island of the same name in San Francisco Bay, USA. It operated from 1934 to 1963 and was known as one of the strictest prisons in the United States.

It held some of the most dangerous criminals, including Al Capone and Robert Stroud. Due to the island's isolation and strong currents, escapes were considered nearly impossible.

After its closure, the prison became a tourist attraction and a popular museum.

According to the FBI, during its operation, 36 men made 14 escape attempts - but nearly all were either caught or did not survive.
