Russian President Vladimir Putin will want to stop the killings if oil prices drop. Right now, Russia’s economy is in bad shape, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with CNBC.

The American leader believes that if energy prices drop low enough, the Kremlin chief will "stop killing people."

"If you get energy down, another $10 a barrel, he's going to have no choice because his economy stinks," Trump emphasized.

New price cap on Russian oil

The European Union previously introduced its 18th package of sanctions against Russia. The key measure in this package was a new price cap on Russian oil.

The new price cap sets the price of Russian oil 15% below the average market price of Russian crude.

As a result, the price cap was lowered from $60 to approximately $47.60 per barrel.

Notably, the United States declined to impose such restrictions at the G7 level. According to unnamed Bloomberg sources, this decision could have only been made by President Donald Trump himself.

The original $60 per barrel price cap had been introduced by all G7 members when Joe Biden was still the US President.
