US President Donald Trump believes he has the right to run for a third term because the 2020 election was allegedly rigged. Yet just minutes earlier, he had acknowledged that the law prohibits it, according to CNN.

Trump initially acknowledged that the restriction exists.

“I think the law said — I’m not 100% sure — but I think the law says that I’m not allowed to run again. I’ve studied that phrase,” he said.

He was referring to the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which limits presidents to two terms in office.

However, Trump soon made the opposite claim.

“They rigged the election. They rigged that election,” he insisted.

Trump once again repeated his claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election, which he lost to Joe Biden. There is no evidence to support those claims.

“We did so good,” the president added.

If Trump runs in the 2028 election, it will be his fourth presidential campaign and his attempt to secure a third term in office.

This is not the first time Trump has talked about serving a third term. In late February, during a speech in Texas, he similarly claimed that he had the right to seek another term because he had allegedly been “cheated” in the 2020 election.

Trump's latest remarks came amid the campaign ahead of the November 3 midterm elections to Congress. Republicans are trying to retain control of both chambers, while analysts consider several districts in Iowa too close to call.
