US President Donald Trump announced on Monday, April 21, that he will attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, according to a post from the American president on Truth Social.

"Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome. We look forward to being there," Trump said on his social media page.

Earlier, American media had reported the possibility of such a trip for Trump to attend the farewell ceremony for Pope Francis. The New York Post, in particular, had written about it.

The funeral of Pope Francis is expected to take place within four to six days after his death, although the exact schedule has not yet been confirmed.

Death of Pope Francis

Pope Francis passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

Later in the evening, the Vatican officially announced the cause of death. Pope Francis suffered a stroke, after which he fell into a coma.

Regarding the funeral, the entire process is governed by a special church document. During his lifetime, Pope Francis expressed his desire to be buried in one of the four main basilicas of Rome - at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
