The US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is currently a major obstacle to peace talks with Iran, according to Sky News.
The Chief of the Pakistani Army, Field Marshal Asim Munir, who is a key mediator in the peace talks between the US and Iran, told President Donald Trump that the US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz is currently an obstacle to peace talks.
Munir spoke with Trump by phone, and the US President told him he would consider the advice.
This call took place after Iran rejected the US proposal for new peace talks, and both sides faced mutual blockades in the Strait of Hormuz.
Background
The day before, Iran had derailed the second round of talks with the US. The Tehran delegation did not show up for the meeting in Pakistan, citing Washington’s excessive demands and the naval blockade of Iranian ports.
A day earlier, US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Tehran, demanding the adoption of a new agreement, promising to destroy the country’s critical infrastructure in the event of a refusal. He specified that he was giving Iran until the conclusion of the talks in Pakistan.
Iran, in turn, stated that it does not recognize any ultimatums from the US and does not intend to transfer its enriched uranium to the American side or any other country.
Meanwhile, Iran also responded sharply to calls from the European Union to open the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baghaei advised the EU to keep its lectures to itself and called control over the strait a sovereign matter not subject to external pressure.
