US President Donald Trump has given the green light to a bipartisan bill imposing sanctions on Russia, according to a post by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
Graham noted that he had a very productive meeting with President Trump on various issues and that Trump approved the sanctions bill against Russia.
“This will be well-timed, as Ukraine is making concessions for peace and Putin is all talk, continuing to kill the innocent.,” Graham emphasized.
The senator stated that the bill would allow President Trump to punish countries that buy cheap Russian oil, which fuels Putin’s war machine.
“This bill would give President Trump tremendous leverage against countries like China, India and Brazil to incentivize them to stop buying the cheap Russian oil that provides the financing for Putin’s bloodbath against Ukraine,” he wrote.
Lindsey Graham added that he is looking forward to a strong bipartisan vote as soon as next week.
Lindsey Graham’s initiatives
Lindsey Graham is a co-author of a bill proposing a 500% tariff on US imports from countries that purchase Russian oil, petroleum products, natural gas, or uranium. The legislation includes both primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and individuals supporting the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine.
Among the 50 Senate co-sponsors of the bill, there is an equal split between Republicans and Democrats, highlighting broad bipartisan support for the initiative.
The bill aims to weaken Russia’s economy and pressure Russian leader Vladimir Putin into negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
Earlier, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham threatened that if Russia does not return the Ukrainian children it has abducted, he would push a bill to designate Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, calling the kidnappings a repulsive and barbaric crime.
Graham has also called for increased pressure on Russia and for the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
