US President Donald Trump stated that the United States will begin a new round of negotiations with Iran in the very near future. According to him, Washington has decided to refrain from launching new strikes against the Islamic Republic to give a diplomatic solution a chance, France24 reports.

The US President announced the start of a new dialogue to reporters aboard Air Force One. According to Trump, the talks are set to begin as early as Monday, August 3.

"Obviously, they don't want to be attacked. They knew the extent of the attack because they saw it forming. Now what we're doing is we're talking to them in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon," said the US President.

Trump made it clear that the decision to refrain from new military strikes was linked to the desire to reach an agreement with Tehran.

Oil prices plummet

Against the backdrop of the US President’s statements and the decision not to strike Iran, global oil prices plummeted.

At the start of trading, Brent crude futures fell by $5.52 (6.28%) to $82.41 per barrel.

Meanwhile, US WTI crude fell by $5.27 (6.22%) to $79.40 per barrel.

Investors reacted positively to signs of a possible de-escalation of the conflict and the prospect of a diplomatic resolution, which could also help stabilize shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Background

The day before, Trump stated that the US had called off a planned strike against Iran. According to the US leader, he made this decision after Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries appealed to Washington to refrain from an attack following the reaching of agreements on the key provisions of a future deal.

For its part, Tehran responded to the White House's earlier threats. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the response would target not only US interests but also the countries participating in any potential strikes.
