Trump ally criticizes Zelenskyy a day after their meeting
Ohio Senator JD Vance, a key ally of Donald Trump in the elections, criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This occurred a day after the meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump, according to The New York Times.
Speaking in Newtown, Pennsylvania, Vance began his speech by criticizing Zelenskyy for visiting an ammunition factory in Scranton alongside the state’s Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro.
"He came to campaign with the Democratic leadership of this country. We spent $200 billion on Ukraine. You know what I wish Zelenskyy would do when he comes to the United States of America? Say thank you to the people of Pennsylvania and everybody else," Vance stated.
As noted by the NYT, during his visit to the factory, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the US for its support. He told the factory workers that they had saved millions of Ukrainians. On his social media, the president mentioned - "it is in places like this where you can truly feel that the democratic world can prevail."
It is worth adding that Vance has been opposed to US aid to Ukraine. In a recent interview with The New Yorker, Zelenskyy called Vance "too radical" due to the Republican's comments about exchanging territory for a peace agreement with Russia. Vance responded by criticizing Zelenskyy.
What preceded this
Recall that during his visit to the US, Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited a defense plant in Pennsylvania that produces shells for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. US House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Ukraine’s ambassador to the US, Oksana Markarova, for organizing the visit.
He was displeased that Zelenskyy was accompanied by Democrats. Johnson demanded that Zelenskyy dismiss Markarova. Zelenskyy emphasized that he would not discuss this matter in the US.
