The White House is reportedly consulting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who is said to be offering "good advice" to US President Donald Trump on the war in Ukraine, US Special Envoy for Belarus John Cole told Belarusian Telegraph Agency (BelTA).
Following talks in Belarus, Cole said that Lukashenko provides guidance to Trump and his administration on various aspects of the war in Ukraine and that his recommendations are considered helpful.
He added that Lukashenko and Russian leader Vladimir Putin have "long-standing friendly relations," which could be useful as the White House seeks to advance its peace plan for resolving the war in Ukraine.
The US special envoy noted that while Putin may accept some advice and reject others, the interaction is intended to support the process.
Following the talks with the US, Lukashenko announced an amnesty for 123 political prisoners, including opposition figures Viktar Babaryka and Maria Kalesnikava.
In total, 114 people were transferred to Ukraine to continue to Poland or other European countries, depending on their wishes. Five of those sent were Ukrainian citizens.
In exchange for the release of political prisoners, the US decided to lift sanctions on Belarusian potash, a move confirmed by John Cole.
