Trump administration buys thousands of gloves capable of shocking migrants

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is preparing for a large-scale purchase of special equipment for its personnel. The items in question are gloves that look like standard patrol gear but conceal a function that could significantly alter the nature of arrests, according to The Guardian.
ICE plans to spend up to $20 million to purchase thousands of electroshock gloves manufactured by the American company Compliant Technologies LLC. According to the manufacturer, the device delivers an electrical pulse that causes pain and, it is claimed, typically helps gain compliance in less than three seconds.
The gloves function as standard patrol gear until the officer activates the electric mode. To deliver the shock, the device must be applied directly to the skin. The manufacturer claims the gloves leave no burns, marks, or scars after use, describing the device as a de-escalation tool.
What makes such equipment dangerous
Meanwhile, human rights groups have spoken out against ICE's plan. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has stated that the agency is already facing criticism over the use of force during immigration operations.

According to Jenna Rolnik Borchetta, deputy director of the ACLU's Policing Project, the ability to administer an electric shock at the press of a button is particularly concerning due to what she considers insufficient oversight of ICE officers' actions.
"Now they will be able to deploy electric shocks with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do," she said.
At the same time, the manufacturer cautions against using the device as punishment for verbal non-compliance or belligerence. It is also not recommended for use on children, pregnant women, the elderly, or individuals with disabilities.
