Transnistria appeals to Russia for 'protection' against Moldova

In particular, they addressed the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the European Parliament, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urging them to "influence the leadership of Moldova to return to adequate dialogue and cease violations of the rights and freedoms of the residents of Transnistria."

According to the statement of local MPs, Moldova allegedly initiated an "economic war" against the unrecognized PMR. They accused Chisinau of deliberately obstructing negotiations with Tiraspol.

Transnistrian issue

Transnistria is one of the regions of Moldova that declared its purported independence in 1990. No state has recognized the "republic." Russia particularly supports Transnistria. The country provides military, economic, political, and diplomatic support, and maintains over a thousand troops there.

Recently, information emerged that the MPs of Transnistria planned to ask the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to annex the region during the assembly on February 28. As the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported, representatives of the unrecognized authority may organize a pseudo-referendum.

The head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov, said that the PMR did not plan to join the Russian Federation.
