A powerful explosion occurred on a gas pipeline in Malaysia, causing a large-scale fire, CNN reports.

According to the media resource, the explosion took place near the capital, Kuala Lumpur. Residents of nearby houses are being evacuated.

Photos and videos from the scene show a towering inferno near a gas station in Putra Heights, in the central state of Selangor. It was visible from several kilometers away.

As the national oil company Petronas emphasizes, the fire broke out on one of its pipelines at 08:23 a.m. local time. Authorities report that 33 people sustained burns.

The damaged pipeline has been isolated. Media also report that several residential buildings caught fire as a result of the explosion. Rescue teams state that there may be dead victims, but they cannot predict the exact number.

Earlier, at the beginning of December last year, monsoon rains hit Malaysia and southern Thailand. These rains caused floods that claimed the lives of more than 30 people.
