Three habits doctors follow to maintain good posture
Good posture is the key to an attractive appearance, as well as the health of the spine and internal organs. To maintain proper posture, doctors follow three tips every day, tells the Health website.
Many children used to reject their parents' requests to stand up straight, but good posture is important for several reasons. Proper posture can significantly impact health and mobility as one ages.
Specialists have shared how they maintain their own posture throughout the day, even with a busy schedule.
Performing exercises
Dr. Rahul Shah, a medical doctor and orthopedic surgeon, shared that several times a week, he combines cardio workouts with strength exercises.
"Cardiovascular and strength workouts serve to increase my endurance as well as the harmony in which my muscles work in concert," he said.
He noted that this combination enhances the natural ability to tilt the head in alignment with the pelvis with minimal extra concentration or strain, allowing attention to daily individual clinical tasks.
Rowing, bench presses, and overhead presses are his favorite exercises for focusing on multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
Additionally, yoga and pilates are excellent for strengthening the upper and lower back muscles.
Mindfulness
Being mindful helps check your body to ensure you are in the optimal position, whether sitting or standing.
"If I’m looking at my phone for an extended period of time, I make sure to hold my phone up at eye level," the expert said.
At first, it will require a lot of conscious effort, but once it becomes a habit, it becomes less of a problem. You can also set reminders on your phone every 30 minutes.
Proper workspace setup
Dr. Harvey Smith, a medical doctor, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the curve of the lower back while sitting. Check if you can slide your hand between your lower back and the backrest of the chair. Also, periodically make sure your shoulders are pulled back and your gaze is forward.
Adjusting the height of your computer monitor or positioning the keyboard closer or farther away on your desk can be helpful for your back.
He also mentioned adjusting the chair so that your feet touch the ground. If your legs are positioned incorrectly while sitting, it can cause the lower spine to slouch.
Therefore, making small adjustments to your workspace can gradually improve your posture over time.
