According to experts, a new study examined the effects of citrus juice consumption, including orange and grapefruit juices.
It was found that the risk of stone formation increased by 37% in men who consumed grapefruit daily, while the second study showed that orange juice protects against stone formation by 12%.
"Citrus fruit juices exert their potential protective effect in multiple ways. The first and most obvious one is the beneficial addition of fluid intake itself with citrus juice consumption. The second is the citrate content in citrus fruit juices, which is one of the strongest inhibitors of urinary stone formation," the experts noted.
This citrate content plays a fundamental role in protecting against uric acid stones by making urine more alkaline.
Who should avoid eating oranges
Oranges are not recommended for people with gastritis with high acidity, as the fruit contains acid that can aggravate irritation of the stomach lining.
They should also be avoided by those with pancreatitis, as the fruit contains a high amount of sugars, which are contraindicated for this condition.
It is not recommended to brush your teeth after eating an orange or drinking orange juice, as it weakens the enamel.
