After eating spinach, many people notice a gritty or chalky feeling on their teeth, a film, or stickiness. This is not accidental — it's caused by the plant's chemical composition, according to Eating Well.

How spinach affects your teeth

Spinach is not only rich in nutrients such as vitamin K and potassium, but it is also linked to health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and supporting eye health.

Spinach is versatile and used in many dishes, from smoothies to salads. However, one downside is that it can leave a strange chalky sensation on the teeth.

Oxalates are salts of oxalic acid and come in both soluble and insoluble forms. Insoluble calcium salts are what leave a coating on teeth. Oxalic acid itself does not harm teeth, though excessive amounts may contribute to kidney stone formation.

A strong sensation on the teeth may indicate:

  • Thin enamel
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Saliva production issues
  • Accumulated plaque

There are three cooking methods that can reduce this sensation.

Ways to prepare spinach

Steaming

This method can help reduce oxalate levels in cooked foods like spinach. Use about 170 ml of water for three handfuls of spinach and cook over medium heat in a covered pan to create steam. The spinach will wilt in about four minutes. Drain excess water before eating.

Adding fats

Fats can reduce the astringent feeling. Good options include:

  • Olive oil
  • Butter
  • Cream
  • Cheese (Parmesan, feta)

Quickly sautéing spinach in butter for 1–2 minutes works well.

Combining with dairy products

Calcium binds oxalates, reducing the chalky feeling. Good combinations include:

  • Spinach with cheese
  • Spinach in a creamy sauce
  • Spinach omelet with cheese
