Stress affects not only emotional state but can also worsen memory function. Prolonged nervous tension increases cortisol levels — a hormone that negatively affects brain areas responsible for memory and concentration, according to professor and dietitian Oleh Shvets.

How stress affects memory

Stress and formation of memories

According to the doctor, in a stressful state, it is harder for people to form short-term memories and convert them into long-term ones. In particular, learning becomes more difficult under stress.

Memories can also change after they are formed. When a person recalls something, they may replace that memory with their current experience, which partially alters its content.

Accuracy of memories

If a person is under stress during a certain event, it may be more difficult for them to recall details. Stress affects both perception and the ability to remember.

“This is one of the reasons why eyewitness testimony is quite unreliable. People cannot be sure they correctly remember what they saw,” the specialist noted.

Additional risks of stress

The duration of stress matters. Stress can interfere with memory formation if it occurs while a memory is being created.

An increase in cortisol levels does not directly determine memory impairment. “Studies have not found a correlation between cortisol levels and the degree of stress impact on memory,” the report says.

Therefore, increased cortisol production does not necessarily lead to greater memory impairment.

Long-term stress can lead to exhaustion. This results in cognitive impairment, reduced attention, and worsening memory.

How to improve memory

Breathing exercises. Psychological practices can improve the ability to recall information in stressful situations.

Physical activity. A 12-week training program can improve memory and other cognitive functions. This is especially relevant for people experiencing chronic stress.

Mindfulness. Scientists have found that mindfulness practices not only reduce stress but also improve sleep quality.
