A kiwi smoothie before bed may be a simple, natural way to relieve constipation. The fruit supports healthy digestion and may improve bowel regularity within just a few days, according to Eating Well.

Why a kiwi smoothie is beneficial

It's packed with fiber

One reason kiwi smoothies may help prevent constipation is their unique fiber composition. Kiwi contains both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance in the colon that helps soften stools, while insoluble fiber adds bulk, making bowel movements easier to pass.

The fiber in kiwi also has a greater water-holding capacity than psyllium husk or many fiber supplements commonly recommended for constipation.

Supports gut function

While fiber plays a key role in maintaining regular bowel movements, kiwi also contains a natural enzyme called actinidin, which supports digestion.

Actinidin helps break down harder-to-digest proteins, such as those found in beef and gluten-containing foods. It also speeds up stomach emptying, promoting smoother digestion.

After dinner or another large meal, actinidin may stimulate bowel activity, helping move waste through the digestive tract more efficiently.

Makes bowel movements easier

Kiwi smoothies may also help relieve constipation thanks to unique compounds found in the fruit. Kiwi contains calcium oxalate raphides—needle-shaped crystals embedded in the flesh.

These crystals help stimulate mucus secretion in the intestines. The mucus acts as a natural lubricant, allowing stool to pass through the digestive tract more easily.

How to make a kiwi smoothie

The key is to let kiwi be the star ingredient while pairing it with foods that are gentle on the digestive system and promote gut health.

Wash two ripe green kiwis and leave the skin on. Add water, almond milk, or lactose-free milk. Mix in flaxseeds or chia seeds for an extra boost of soluble fiber.

You can also add fresh mint, as it contains menthol, a compound that helps relax the smooth muscles of the intestines, reduce spasms, and ease stomach discomfort.

If desired, add ice or extra frozen fruit, then blend everything until smooth.
