Many people store everyday foods like raw meat or leftover rice without giving it much thought. But choosing the right packaging can make a big difference to food safety.

Daily Express explains which foods should never be wrapped in foil or plastic wrap.

What you should know about foil and plastic wrap

Keeping food at the right temperature isn't the only thing that matters. Official guidance says that aluminum foil and plastic wrap aren't always the best options for storing leftovers. Using the wrong material can reduce food quality and even affect how safe it is to eat.

Experts from Food Standards Scotland (FSS) warn that plastic wrap has important limitations. Consumers are advised to read product labels carefully, as not all types of cling film are suitable for every kind of food. Manufacturers should clearly state which foods the wrap is safe to come into contact with.

The key rule is that some plastic wraps should never touch fatty foods. These include:

  • Any sweet or savory baked goods
  • Cakes with buttercream or chocolate icing (always check the packaging first)
  • Fatty raw meats, such as fresh bacon
  • Pies with fillings
  • Fried foods and deep-fried meat
  • All types of cheese

Experts also strongly advise against using plastic wrap anywhere it could melt and come into direct contact with food. This includes ovens and hot pots or pans on the stove. When using a microwave, make sure the plastic wrap does not touch the food itself.

Why foil isn't suitable for every food

Similar rules apply to aluminum foil. Experts say it's best to avoid wrapping or storing highly acidic foods in foil or aluminum containers.

Foods that should not be stored in foil include:

  • Limes and lemons
  • Fresh pineapple
  • All types of cabbage
  • Raspberries
  • Rhubarb
  • Fresh tomatoes and tomato-based dishes
  • Most other soft fruits and berries
