UEFA president Alexander Čeferin responded to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s remarks about a possible lift of the ban on Russian teams in international competitions, according to France 24.
“Position is clear and has not changed”
According to the head of the organization, UEFA continues to adhere to its previously adopted decisions regarding the ban on Russian teams.
“UEFA's position is clear and has not changed but we are looking into everything every day,” Čeferin said during the UEFA Congress in Brussels.
It should be recalled that after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia was suspended from all club and international tournaments under UEFA. As a result, Russian football has effectively been outside the international competition system for several years.
Infantino called for easing
At the same time, FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently stated that the ban has achieved nothing and could only exacerbate tensions.
He suggested that the return of Russian teams, including at the youth level, could “contribute to dialogue.”
These remarks sparked a strong reaction in Ukraine, where it was emphasized that restrictions must remain in place as long as Russia continues the war.
Doors not formally closed
Despite the firm stance, Čeferin left room for potential changes in the future.
“The world is changing so fast that it is even hard to follow. Let's see what the future brings,” he added.
Currently, sanctions against Russian football remain in effect, and the return of Russian teams to UEFA tournaments is not officially being considered.
Earlier, we reported that the IOC has signaled a potential return for Russians.
