Testosterone and women’s health - Why it matters and how to regulate it

Testosterone levels play an important role and are involved in many processes in the female body. There are certain ways to keep this hormone in balance, according to Ukrainian endocrinologist Olesia Pidmurniak on Instagram.
The impact of testosterone on the female body
Bone health
Testosterone helps maintain bone strength and prevents osteoporosis. It is also responsible for maintaining muscle mass and strength.
Sexual function
Low testosterone levels can reduce libido. The hormone also affects energy levels, mood, and the ability to cope with stress.
Cognitive functions
Some studies indicate a connection between testosterone and concentration, as well as memory.
What happens when testosterone is imbalanced
- Low levels can cause fatigue, muscle mass loss, mood deterioration, and decreased libido.
- High levels can lead to acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism), menstrual cycle disorders, and increased skin oiliness.
How to maintain normal testosterone levels
To keep testosterone within a healthy range, it is necessary to:
- Maintain a balanced diet (adequate protein, healthy fats, and zinc intake).
- Engage in physical activity (especially strength training).
- Manage stress levels and ensure quality sleep.
- If needed, correct hormonal imbalances under the supervision of an endocrinologist.
It is important to note that frequent lack of sleep or nighttime wakefulness (especially for women whose jobs involve night shifts) can activate adrenal testosterone production, regardless of genetic predisposition.
Diet as a key factor
Diet changes are one of the most effective ways to maintain a healthy testosterone level. Combined with a healthy lifestyle, proper sleep regulation, and appropriate physical activity, it forms an important strategy for naturally normalizing testosterone levels and keeping them in check.
