German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced an agreement with the French government to strengthen anti-terrorism cooperation during the Summer Olympics and the European Football Championship.

Such intentions to cooperate with law enforcement agencies of the two countries are related to the threat of possible terrorist attacks during the planned major sporting events in Europe.

"German police forces will be deployed to the Olympics in Paris, French police will be deployed to the Euro in Germany," Faeser said.

She emphasized that security during major sporting events is a top priority in both countries.

The German Interior Minister also said that she had agreed on "close cooperation" with her French counterpart Gerald Darmanin.

It should be noted that this week Faeser has already announced control at all German borders during the European Championship. She explained that this measure is essential to "prevent violent criminals - Islamists, other extremists or hooligans - from entering the country."

The German agency explained that the federal police will act carefully to ensure that the control measures have the least possible impact on passengers and commercial traffic.

According to the head of the German Interior Ministry, the country's security agencies will be arming themselves "even more strongly against all current threats." This ranges "from protecting against Islamists and other potential violent criminals to securing our networks against cyberattacks," she said, adding that local authorities in Germany will do everything possible to "detect and stop the plans of Islamist terrorists in advance."

The European Football Championship will be held in Germany from mid-June to mid-July, and the Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

Threat of terrorist attacks in Europe

Earlier it became known that Islamists were preparing several attacks in European cities. The target could be Christmas church services. The police arrested several people.

Earlier, Germany decided to strengthen security measures in Cologne Cathedral due to the threat of terrorist attacks.

After the terrorist attack in the Russian shopping center Crocus City Hall, the terrorist threat level in France was raised to the maximum. Intelligence has stepped up checks on citizens arriving from Central Asia.

Yesterday, Western media reported that French intelligence services recommended canceling the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris. The concerns are, in particular, caused by the terrorist attack in the Moscow region.
