In Sweden, a man has been arrested on suspicion of espionage. According to prosecutors, the case may be linked to Russia, according to SVT.
Senior prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said that preliminary findings indicate the suspect may have been influenced by Russian intelligence. At the same time, he stressed that final conclusions will be drawn only after the investigation is completed.
The man, in his 30s, has been charged with espionage and lives in central Sweden.
On Wednesday, January 7, the Stockholm District Court ordered him to be remanded in custody.
It is known that the suspect previously cooperated with the Swedish Armed Forces. According to SVT, between 2018 and 2022, he worked as a consultant for an IT company providing services to the defense sector and later founded his own computer firm.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority declined to provide further details, citing the sensitive nature of the case.
"This is a very delicate investigation, so I cannot disclose more details at this stage," Ljungqvist said in a press statement.
Espionage cases linked to Russia
In October, a Brussels police officer was detained on suspicion of spying for China and possibly Russia. The officer reportedly had access to the international diplomatic community in Brussels, enabling the collection of sensitive information. His unit patrols areas surrounding EU institutions.
It was also reported that Russia has been recruiting teenagers in the Netherlands for espionage. Local police detained two 17-year-old boys suspected of collecting information in The Hague on behalf of a pro-Russian hacker.
According to prosecutors, one of the teenagers in August walked past Europol, Eurojust, and the Embassy of Canada in the Netherlands with a device capable of detecting networks and even intercepting data.
Investigators believe the teenagers may have acted in the interests of Russian intelligence, with contacts allegedly established via Telegram.
