Sweden announces new military aid package for Ukraine
The Swedish government has announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth 4.6 billion Swedish kronor (about 400 million euros).
This package aims to meet Ukraine's most urgent military needs and create opportunities for future actions. It includes equipment donations, direct purchases, gear kits, and financial assistance.
As part of the 17th package, Sweden is moving into a new phase of military support, focusing more on procurement than just donations. The package includes three large contracts to purchase priority equipment worth about 600 million Swedish kronor (about 52 million euros).
Military equipment
The aid package provides military equipment for ground combat worth 500 million Swedish kronor (about 43 million euros). Sweden has already provided Ukraine with anti-aircraft missile systems, and this package includes additional Robot 70 anti-aircraft missiles to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
Ukraine also requested anti-tank weapons, and the package included anti-tank shells, grenade launchers, and mines. In addition, the package contains contamination protection equipment, mortar ammunition, training materials for recruits, and winter gear for Ukrainian soldiers.
The package also includes naval support worth 500 million Swedish kronor (about 43 million euros) to protect Ukrainian commercial shipping and support ground forces along rivers where active combat operations are taking place.
The new aid package from Sweden also includes six additional Stridsbåt 90, including solutions for naval supply to support the maintenance units of the Ukrainian Navy.
InternationaliInitiatives to support Ukraine
As part of the 17th military aid package, the Swedish government has also allocated just over 700 million Swedish kronor (about 61 million euros) for financial donations to funds and multilateral initiatives in 2024. These international programs, involving several countries, have proven effective in creating conditions for large-scale arms and equipment purchases.
The initiatives include both temporary multilateral projects, such as ammunition supply programs, and permanent funds, such as the International Fund for Ukraine led by the United Kingdom. These measures are aimed at coordinating efforts and maximizing support for Ukraine's defense needs.
Sweden's aid to Ukraine
In total, since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Sweden has provided Ukraine with military assistance worth 48.1 billion Swedish kronor (approximately 4.2 billion euros). In 2024 alone, the amount of Swedish support reached 25 billion Swedish kronor (about 2.2 billion euros).
In May, the Swedish government announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth more than 13 billion Swedish kronor (1.3 billion dollars).
Ukraine and Sweden have also signed a bilateral security guarantee agreement.
