Stranger Things expands universe with spin-off - Key details A still from Stranger Things

After the fifth season of Stranger Things concluded, the show’s creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, officially confirmed the development of a spin-off. Despite the finale of the main story, the universe of the project is far from over and is preparing for a new chapter with an entirely different mythology.

RBC-Ukraine provides details on the new spin-off, including what fans can expect from the story and its fresh mythology.

What is known about the Stranger Things spin-off

In an interview with Deadline, Ross Duffer addressed a popular fan theory suggesting that the finale of the fifth season contains a direct hint at a Montauk-related spin-off. According to him, this assumption is incorrect.

''It's not Hopper mentioning Montauk. There's no Montauk spinoff,'' Ross emphasized.

He explained that the reference was more of a symbolic nod to longtime fans of the series.

“That was more of a wink to the fans, deep-cut fans that know that the show started as Montauk, '' stressing that it should not be read as an arc setup.

Duffer also dismissed rumors about familiar characters taking leading roles in the spin-off.

According to him, the new series will not focus on Holly or any of the other children from Hawkins.

''It’s something much smaller than that. It is early days, but it is an entirely new mythology,'' the creator added.

A new story in a familiar universe

According to Ross Duffer, the spin-off will remain part of the Stranger Things universe, but it will operate under its own rules.

''It’s got its own story and its own mythology,'' the showrunner emphasized.

This view was confirmed by Matt Duffer in a comment to Variety. He acknowledged that the finale of the fifth season indeed included an element that will serve as the basis for the new series.

Specifically, it concerns a mysterious stone that appears in the final episodes.

''Spinoffy, yeah. You pinned us down,'' Matt Duffer joked.

''The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it,'' he added.

At the same time, he assured that the spin-off will not serve as a detailed continuation of the Mind Flayer’s story or other key antagonists.

The Duffer brothers confirmed that work on the project is already underway.

''We’re going to start working on it again on Monday,'' Ross said.
