Steam introduces new default game settings: Details
Valve is testing a new feature in the beta version of the Steam client that that will make games by default to only download updates when you launch, the American technology news website The Verge reports.
Currently, Steam, by default, determines which game updates to download based on several factors.
"For games you recently played, Steam will download game updates shortly after they are released. For games that you haven't played in a while, Steam might wait a few days to bundle multiple updates together or choose to download the update while you are asleep," Valve explained.
This new default option to delay downloading updates gives players more control. According to Valve, this means users can postpone updates for a large game until they actually want to play it.
The new option can be found in the Steam beta client's settings under the Downloads section. "You can set the default to: let Steam decide when to update the game (based on factors like when you last played the game, bandwidth availability, etc.) or wait to update until the game is launched," Valve stated.
Download settings for individual games can still be adjusted in their properties and will take precedence over the global settings. Valve noted that the descriptions of these options have been made clearer. The beta now also allows for managing individual game update settings through the Steam client's general download options.
