Sri Lanka demands compensation from Russia for citizens killed in Ukraine war
A delegation from Sri Lanka has called on Russia to allow its citizens fighting against Ukraine to return home, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's delegation led by Foreign Minister Tharaka Balasuriya visited the Russian Federation from June 26 to 27, 2024. Talks were held with representatives of Russia regarding Sri Lankan citizens fighting for Russia on a contractual basis.
Additionally, Sri Lanka demands compensation from Russia for the deaths of 17 citizens in the war against Ukraine. Sri Lanka also insists on the early termination of contracts and resolution of financial issues for its citizens still engaged in combat.
Mercenaries from Sri Lanka are fighting on Russia's side
Due to a shortage of manpower for the war against Ukraine, the Kremlin has been recruiting mercenaries from other countries. Previously, it was confirmed that Ukrainian forces captured mercenaries from Sri Lanka in the Chasiv Yar area of the Donetsk region.
In May of this year, Sri Lanka announced an investigation into the fate of its citizens who went to Russia.
