With the arrival of spring, many people enjoy the first warm rays and spend more time in the sun. However, during this period, UV radiation can be particularly harmful to the skin, according to dermatologist Olha Tarnavska

Why skin is more vulnerable in spring

According to the dermatologist, in spring people usually don’t feel strong heat and therefore often neglect sun protection. In summer, when temperatures are high, most people try to stay in the shade or use sunscreen. In spring, however, many eagerly expose their faces to the first sun rays.

The dermatologist explains that after winter, the skin is practically unaccustomed to ultraviolet radiation. At this time, it has very little natural protective pigment—melanin.

Even at temperatures around +10 °C, UVA rays actively affect the skin. They penetrate deeper layers and gradually break down collagen fibers—the protein responsible for skin firmness and youthful appearance.

This process is called photoaging. Its peculiarity is that people don’t feel an immediate burn, as in summer. However, the consequences may appear weeks or months later in the form of new wrinkles or pigmentation spots.

How to properly protect skin in spring

To prevent premature aging, experts recommend using sunscreen even in cool weather.

According to the dermatologist, it’s best to choose creams labeled “Broad Spectrum,” which means the product protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation:

  • UVB rays, which cause sunburn;

  • UVA rays, which cause photoaging.

Regular use of SPF in spring helps keep skin healthy, prevents wrinkles, and reduces the risk of pigmentation spots.

Why SPF is important even in cool weather

Olha emphasizes that ultraviolet radiation works regardless of air temperature. Even in March or April, sun exposure can harm the skin.
