Certain foods may increase the risk of developing anemia if consumed with tea, citing the Daily Express.

About tea and other foods

Experts caution that drinking tea alongside certain foods may cause health problems.

Pharmacist and nutritionist Deborah Grayson warns that foods such as red meat and green vegetables could heighten the likelihood of severe nutrient deficiencies if consumed with a cup of tea.

"If you always have tea with your meal, you could become anaemic," she said.

Grayson added that women with menstrual cycles are particularly vulnerable to the risk of anemia.

The expert advised avoiding iron-rich foods, such as steak and roast beef, as well as green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and kale when drinking tea.

The reason is that tea and coffee contain chemicals that block iron absorption, including polyphenols, which can also help prevent inflammation.

Polyphenols are found in much smaller amounts in fruits and vegetables. Anemia can lead to distressing symptoms like extreme fatigue, hair loss, and recurrent infections.

According to Grayson, people should avoid drinking any liquid during meals if they aim to gain weight or build muscle.

Alternative salad options, like arugula and chicory, might be better, as they stimulate digestion and help the body prepare for the full breakdown of the food we eat.

Other tips include not eating three hours before bed and standing for a bit after meals instead of lying down right away. Also, always eat at the table rather than on the couch.
